Course Descriptions
All students will be exposed to the sixth grade standards in History-Social Science and Earth Science. They will be held responsible for knowing and passing Benchmark Tests/Projects that correlate to the standards. History-Social Science
Ancient civilization is a standards based course. This course examines key Ancient Civilizations of the world where people created the first complex societies, cities, governments and empires. The course will take the students into the past to learn about the geographic, political, economic and religious contributions and cultures of each civilization from early man up to the fall of Rome and the Early Americas. Earth Science
A standards based course. The course will focus on an introduction to Earth science, weathering and soil, erosion and deposition, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, the atmosphere, weather, climate and climate change, ecosystems, living resources, energy and material resources. The students will also be introduced to scientific inquiry and investigation.
Course Objectives/Goals
History-Social Science
The student will: • Learn and recognize that interpretations of history are subject to change as new information is uncovered. • Learn to describe what is known through archeological studies of the early physical and cultural development of humankind from the Paleolithic Era to the agricultural revolution. • Analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the early civilizations of: Mesopotamia Egypt Kush Ancient Hebrews India China Greece Rome • Analyze the causes and effects of the vast expansion and ultimate disintegration of the Roman Empire Course Objectives/Goals continued
Earth Science
The student will: • learn how the motion of Earth’s plates causes earthquakes and volcanoes and builds mountains • learn how scientists measure and locate earthquakes, and what determines how much damage an earthquake does • learn about the forces that shape Earth’s surface: rivers and oceans shape the land by eroding material and carrying that material to other places; how rapid natural events such as earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and floods shape the land • learn that the sun provides most of the energy that powers events on earth: that wind, ocean currents, and weather all get their energy directly or indirectly from the sun • learn how energy is transferred among living things and between living things and their environments
The teacher will: • be prepared each day to explain and demonstrate the requisite skill • provide a safe and purposeful learning environment • communicate effectively with parents/guardians and students • maintain an awareness of requirements for State and District tests • present standards/objectives in a coherent manner
Learning Outcomes
History-Social Science
• Students will learn to use maps to identify physical features • Students will learn to use the credibility of primary and secondary sources • Students will understand and distinguish cause and effect, long and short-term casual relations • Students will distinguish fact from opinion in historical narratives and stories • Students will conduct cost-benefit analyses of economic and political issues • Students will understand how events are related in time • Students will construct timelines • Students will use a variety of maps and documents to identify physical and cultural features Earth Science
• Students will learn that natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and land features such as mountains are the result of tectonic plate movement • Students will learn that earthquakes vary in size and magnitude and that there are different scales to measure earthquakes and their approximate strengths • Students will learn how weathering and erosion shape the land • Students will learn that the sun provides the energy for most of the Earth’s processes • Students will learn how energy is exchanged on Earth between living and non-living things
Attendance
Students are expected to come to class prepared and on time every day. Students who arrive late to class will be marked tardy and “charged” one “Lobo Buck” by the class treasurer. Students who are absent will be required to obtain a re-admittance card from the attendance office before the start of class. Students must have a note explaining the reason for the absence or the parent may call the school to verify the absence before the student returns to school.
Class Participation
Active participation is an expectation in each and every class at Los Alisos Middle School. Consistent lack of participation will be reflected in the form of lowered citizenship grades.
Missed exam(s) or assignment(s)
Students are responsible for meeting with Ms. Lopez immediately after school the day they return from an absence to turn in and receive all make-up work missed from an excused absence, as well as, to discuss the rescheduling of missed exams and/or quizzes. Each student is responsible to copy from the board under “AGENDA” and fill in their personal agendas those assignments missed. Students are advised to inform their parent that they will need to stay after school for approximately 10 minutes to take care of this business. This 10 minute block of time will be spent meeting with teachers in their core classes. If a student is unable to stay after school for 10 minutes on the day they return to school, they must inform the teacher(s) in order to obtain an extension of time, which will be carried over one additional day. Time allowed for make up work is one additional day for each excused absence. Students absent for more than 3 days will be provided with homework upon parent request (please allow 24 hours notice).
Grading Policy
Your child’s letter grade will be computed according to the following:
Percentage Grade 90 – 100 % A 80 – 89 % B 70 – 79 % C 60 – 69 % D 59% or below F
Grade Weights: History - Social Science Earth Science Quizzes/Exams/Performance 50% 40% Assessments
Participation/daily work/projects/ 50% 60% homework/labs
Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be sent home approximately six (6) weeks from the beginning of the trimester. Parents are asked to review the progress report and then return it to their son’s/daughter’s teacher the following day. Report cards are issued at the end of each trimester. Parents will be given the opportunity to discuss the report card with their son’s/daughter’s teacher during a parent/teacher conference. Parents will be asked to sign a copy of the report card at the parent/teacher conference. Testing Policy
Each course offered at Los Alisos will use similar assessments and grading procedures. Performance Assessments result in a product that shows concepts learned. Math exams and quizzes will require work to be shown to receive credit. Teachers will allow calculators to be used on higher concept learning only. Each teacher will have their own built in policy for low exam scores. The classroom teacher will decide on one of the following policies: to replace an unusually low score with the mean average of the remaining scores, drop an unusually low score. At teacher’s discretion, students may re-take quizzes only, they may not re-take exams. Quizzes are generally 10 questions or less in length, and are given more often. Exams will have more items and will cover a chapter or unit of study. Students may use notes as per their classroom teacher’s directions on quizzes, but not on exams.
Homework Policy
Homework is an important part of a student’s responsibility and is essential to school success. Students are given homework every day, Monday through Thursday, and occasionally on Fridays. Students will copy their daily assignments into their Student Agendas. Students should spend at least 60 - 90 minutes daily on their homework assignments, with the remainder of the time spent on basic math facts, reading for enjoyment, geography, and other related school topics. All students are expected to read a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes per night.
Long-term assignments (reports, projects, etc.) will be assigned each trimester.
Homework will be graded on the completeness and effort shown. Do not write answers without showing work, or no credit will be given for that day’s assignment. All work must be the student's own. Any intellectual work "borrowed" by the student must be properly cited since credit will not be given for plagiarism.
No late work will be accepted for credit. Students that are absent are expected to make up missed homework for any type of verified absence. It is the student’s responsibility to request make-up work.
Assignment acceptance policy
• All work handed in must be neat and include the proper heading. • All assignments must be completed with quality and pride. • Math work must be done in pencil only. • Final drafts must be written in blue or black ink only, typed, or word-processed. • All work must be original student work, and demonstrate a consistent strong effort.
Extra Credit Policy
Teachers may allow students to earn extra credit only as an extension or a special project only if all other work has been turned in.
Discipline Policy/ Consequences
All students are expected to be respectful to all individuals on the Los Alisos campus. They need to be considerate and not disrupt or interfere with the learning process of other students. Classroom behaviors will be governed by the “Lobo Buck” system. Classroom money is earned for demonstrating positive behaviors and classroom money is subtracted by demonstrating negative behaviors. Each student will be given an interest bearing bank account for the purpose of saving “Lobo Bucks.” The accounts will be monitored by Ms. Maytorena and the class core treasurer. Students are encouraged to save their money and keep their account balance positive. Negative accounts must be brought to positive balance status as soon as possible to avoid earning after school detentions. Students need to speak with their teacher if they have any concerns or questions regarding this policy. (Any of the three core teachers) Failure to follow classroom and school expectations may result in a brief conference, low citizenship mark, removal from class and/or detention. Time-out, parent and/or administration contact will be made at the teacher’s discretion. Any objects that are inappropriate to have at school such as cell phones, toys, make-up, permanent markers, etc. will be taken from the student and parents will be notified. The teachers at Los Alisos enjoy teaching and strive to help your child achieve success. Following these guidelines will help him/her be successful. Remember, if your child needs extra help; please encourage him/her to ask questions during class and/or to come see appropriate core teacher after school.
Students must: • Show respect at all times • Bring all materials necessary for learning • Follow all directions (verbal and written) • Complete assigned work on time • Be responsible for obtaining a parent/guardian signature in their agenda Monday - Friday • Maintain excellent attendance (unnecessary tardies or absences must be minimal)
At Los Alisos Middle School we believe, “every teacher has the right to teach and every student has the right to learn.” Any student who interferes with this process will be put through the school wide progressive discipline plan.
1. Verbal Warning/”Lobo Buck” behavior payments 2. Teacher/Student Conference or time-out in another class, with parent contact through phone/email or agenda. 3. Teacher-held detention 4. Referral to the office 5. Student Study Team (with student, parent, teachers, and administrator)
* Depending upon the nature of the behavior or incident, deviation from this hierarchy may vary.
Academic Dishonesty All work must be the student’s own, and not copied from text, electronic media, or any other source. Any intellectual work “borrowed” by the student must be properly cited as credit will not be given for plagiarized work. The student will receive a “0” in the grade book for the assignment if it is determined to be work not of the student’s own.
Parent/Gardian - Teacher Communication
• Teachers will contact parent/guardian through the student agenda or at times by phone or electronic mail. • Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to contact teachers whenever questions or concerns arise. • Please feel free to communicate with your child’s teacher through the agenda. • Teachers will initial and date when they receive your communication, and give a response if possible. • We can also be reached by calling the school office at (562) 868-0865. • If you would like to contact us by electronic mail (e-mail), please make that request in writing (include your e-mail address).
