Mr. Mike Garcia's Message

Welcome parents, students, and community members to Los Alisos Middle School, where college is not a dream… it is a plan.

As the school year begins, I look forward to start my third year as principal of Los Alisos Middle School. This year will mark my fifteenth year with the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District. I have had the privilege of being an administrator at Los Alisos for the past Three years and at Norwalk High School for the previous six years. I also served six years as a teacher and coach at the high school. In those fifteen years, I witnessed hundreds of Los Alisos Alumni thrive, succeed, and live up to the school motto that, “college is not a dream, it is a plan.”

My mission for Los Alisos is to build a high level of expectation for students and teachers so that students are ready to successfully move on to high school, college and careers in order to lead productive and successful lives. Through creating engaging work for students and collaborating amongst teachers, this environment where students can learn and teachers can teach will continue to be the norm at Los Alisos Middle School.

Los Alisos Middle School serves as a learning community where students are challenged and are engaged in rigorous academics through a standards-based curriculum.  We have a strong team of dedicated individuals who provide a welcoming environment where the top priorities are academic achievement and a safe and nurturing school.  Our school program is designed to assist adolescents in making successful transitions from elementary to middle school, and one that prepares them for the challenges of high school and beyond.

We have a Similar School State Ranking that is an 10 out of 10. The state ranks schools across the state based on similar student demographics and populations and 10 is the highest ranking.  Our three year API average is 801. We have grown in each of those three years.  We plan our curriculum, instruction, assessments, and staff development to meet the needs of all our students.  We hold both staff and students accountable for their work, as we provide instruction that meet or exceed State standards.

Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) - Los Alisos offers a transition program to support our incoming students. WEB is a great program that is designed to assist 6th grade students in the transition from elementary to middle school. To do this, 8th grade students become WEB leaders as well as role models for the incoming 6th grade students.

We are proud of our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program.  AVID is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. This is our fourth year having AVID elective classes and now we are implementing schoolwide AVID Strategies so that all students can benefit.

Los Alisos's Math, Science, and Technology Magnet Program had a successful year.  Our Magnet Program is geared to motivate students to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).  We have partnered with USC and Project Lead the Way (PLTW).  A team from our Magnet program competes at the USC MESA Robotic Challenge every year and this year received 1st place. We are very proud of the team's accomplishments and appreciate the coaches for their support.  For the 2015-2016 school year, over 260 students applied, interviewed and were accepted in the Magnet Program, and we look forward to another wonderful year.

This year will be the Third full year we will be offering Bio Medical (Medical Detectives) using the PLTW curriculum. We will be offering the class to 7th and 8th grade students. Medical Detectives (MD) explores the biomedical sciences through hands-on projects and labs that require students to solve a variety of medical mysteries. Students investigate medical careers, vital signs, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as human body systems such as the nervous system. Genetic testing for hereditary diseases and DNA crime scene analysis put the students in the place of real life medical detectives.

We are offering two new classes this coming year. We were chosen by Project Lead the Way (PLTW) last year to pilot Introduction to Computer Science (ICS). This year will be the first full year that students are able to take the course. In this course, students discover the principles of this fast-growing field by focusing on creativity and an iterative design process as they create their own basic apps using MIT App Inventor. The second class we will be offering this year is an extension to our current robotics class. In this class students will get the opportunity to create robots and battle them to see who can create the toughest robot!

This year will also mark the third year Los Alisos will have a Dual Language Program. Our dual language immersion program is a program where ½ of the core curriculum will be taught in Spanish and ½ will be taught in English. Studies show that students that are taught in two languages do better in school, develop stronger literacy and language skills, perform better on state standardized tests, have a higher likelihood of enrolling and passing AP Spanish Tests in high school, and students feel more confident speaking.

Intervention opportunities are offered to all students who need extra support in order to achieve academic proficiency.  Students can also participate in our athletic teams: track and field, cross-country, volleyball, football, soccer, basketball, softball and cheerleading.  Students are also offered a variety of enrichment activities that include: Academic Pentathlon, Band, Orchestra, Guitar, Leadership/ASB, Science Camp and GATE opportunities.

We invite parents to become involved at Los Alisos by volunteering, joining parent groups such as, PTSA, SDMC and ELAC.  Visit our Website regularly to access information about the school, programs and activities.  Our school community operates on the belief that all students can achieve! Remember, “College is not a dream.  It is a Plan”

I am excited for the opportunity to work with you and your child to ensure their experience here at Los Alisos is a rewarding one. I look forward to great things from your child.

Respectfully,

Mike Garcia
Principal
